Chapter 12

As Suzie hurried to the car, she dialed Paul’s number. It rang several times before going to voicemail. She thought about leaving a message, but instead decided that she would try to talk to Fabian first and then go see Paul in person.

As Suzie drove toward the motel, she passed the diner and noticed quite a few cars gathered in the parking lot. She decided to try the diner first. Despite the drama of Jack’s death, many of the people in town for the race were still there. She wondered if Jason had asked some of them to stay, or if they were waiting to find out what had happened, or if they just didn’t want to change their plans. She hoped they would get their answers.

Suzie stepped into the diner and found it fairly busy. But Fabian’s presence stood out, as he sat at an otherwise empty table with an assortment of plates in front of him.

“Hi there.” Suzie sat down across from him and smiled.

“Do I know you?” Fabian squinted at her.

“No, not really. I saw you at the race yesterday. No one is sitting with you, and I hate to eat alone. You don’t mind, do you?” Suzie looked into his eyes.

“I guess not.” Fabian shrugged. “Just keep your voice down please, I have a bit of a headache.”

“Too much fun last night?” Suzie ordered some coffee from the waitress, then looked back at him.

“Way too much.” Fabian sighed. “I don’t even remember what happened.”

“You remember the race, don’t you?” Suzie noticed the way he ducked his head with each word she spoke. She guessed that his hangover was pretty intense.

“Sure, I remember the race. My favorite day of the year.” Fabian picked up his glass of water and took a big swallow. Then he set it back down with a heavy clunk. “At least it was, until Doug and Jack ruined everything.” He shook his head. “I guess I can’t complain about Jack now that he’s dead.”

“It’s always good to be honest.” Suzie met his eyes. “Did you know him well?”

“We were friends. I never expected him to listen to Doug. I mean he pulled such a ridiculous stunt and Jack disqualified me from the race.” Fabian tilted his head as he studied her. “No, I’m pretty sure I do know you.”

“I run the bed and breakfast near the beach, Dune House. Maybe we’ve crossed paths before?” Suzie reached for the cup of coffee the waitress set on the table, then winced as her palm touched the hot mug.

“Yes, I thought so.” Fabian pointed to her hand. “You got hurt on my yacht, yesterday.”

“I did?” Suzie looked up at him. “I’m not sure what you mean.”

“Your hand. I saw you fall and grab onto the rope on my yacht. I meant to come over and check on you, but I got caught up talking to someone.” Fabian leaned closer. “Let me take a look.”

“Oh, I didn’t realize it was your boat. It’s fine. A nurse checked it, yesterday.
